LabVIEW Electro-Optical Application

Polarization_calculator.viExpand

This VI calculates the polarization state produced by a pair of arbitrary wave-plates. The program assumes purely polarized light in and ideal wave-plate media. The light propagates through wave-plate #1 followed by wave-plate #2. The plot represents the state of the polarization exiting wave-plate #2. If the color of the plot is green, the ellipse is right-handed; if the plot is red, the ellipse is left-handed. This application demonstrates some of the utilities in PolarTools, our custom LabVIEW modeling library for polarization and optics.

Panel Descriptions:
bulletControls: Change the thickness and orientation of the birefringent media, current wavelength and input polarization state.
bulletStokes Vector: describes the polarization state produced by current system.
bulletOutput: Shows either
  1. the polarization characteristics (i.e. the azimuth angle and ellipticity and Handedness of the output polarization state) or
  2. the spectral output of the wave-plate stack.

Notes:

1.The azimuth angle has no meaning if the ellipticity = 1.
2. The handedness is meaningless if the ellipticity is 0.
3. The dispersion of the birefringence is meaningless at a single wavelength.
